MARKET

SUSTAINABLE SEAFOOD  |  BROOKLYN, NY

At Mermaid’s Garden, we live and breathe fish.  We love them- in the water and on our plates.  We know that trying to make responsible decisions about the fish we eat can be confusing. Fear not! Mermaid’s Garden is here to help you find seafood choices that are right for you and smart for the planet.

At Mermaid’s Garden we offer impeccably fresh, sustainable seafood. We source our products from small boat fishermen across the United States and around the world. We can tell you where and how your fish was caught, because we think it’s important to know the path your fish takes from the ocean to your plate.

The market, like our Fish Share, highlights fish and shellfish in their seasons, when they’re at their best. Expect Nantucket Bay scallops in the fall, Florida stone crabs in the winter, soft-shell crabs in the spring, and wild Alaskan salmon in the summertime.

FISH SHARE

WHAT IS THE FISH SHARE?

Our fish share is a model that connects fish eaters to fishermen. Participants commit to an agreed upon season, during which they receive regular “shares” of fresh fish. This reconnects coastal communities to their food system, promotes sustainable fishing practices, and strengthens relationships between fishermen and the people they feed.

WHAT IS THE ADVANTAGE TO JOINING THE FISH SHARE?

By committing to the share, you are guaranteed a weekly supply of super fresh, sustainable fish at a reasonable price. Your participation also ensures the fair compensation of the fishermen we work with.  All of our fish is traceable back to the boat it was caught on and the catch method that was used. The Mermaid’s Garden Fish Share offers higher quality, value and transparency than traditional retail models.

HOW DO THE SHARES WORK?

You can purchase either a half- share or a full- share. Both share types run in four week cycles. Half- shares (1-1.25 lbs/week) comfortably feed two people once a week and cost $90. for four weeks. Full- shares (2- 2.25 lbs/week) comfortably feed four people once a week (or two people twice) and cost $180. for four weeks. There is a one time sign up fee of $15. for both share sizes.

WHAT KIND OF FISH ARE OFFERED IN THE MERMAID’S GARDEN FISH SHARE?

Expect to see a variety of local Mid Atlantic and New England fishes year round, including: Acadian Redfish, Black Bass, Bluefish, Haddock, Hake, Mahi Mahi, Monkfish, Pollock, Porgy, Spanish Mackerel, Striped Bass, Summer Flounder, Swordfish, Tilefish, Tuna and more.

DO YOU OFFER SHELLFISH AS WELL AS FINFISH?

Shares consist of filleted fish. Shellfish options are available during the season as substitutions or additions to your fillet share.

WILL ALL THE FISH BE LOCAL?

Most of the fish in the shares will be local. Nonetheless, Mermaid’s Garden is committed to supporting fishing communities across the United States. In the winter we migrate South for some of our fish. We also offer special items like wild Alaskan salmon or Florida stone crabs in their seasons. We guarantee that all of our fish is caught by small boat fishermen using sustainable fishing methods.

She has worked in laboratories at the University of Maryland and Harvard University’s Museum of Comparative Zoology, overseen by her mentors, Dr. Eugenie Clark and Dr. Edward O. Wilson. Out of the lab, she has conducted marine biological field research around the world, including dives in Belize, the Red Sea, Papua New Guinea and the Sea of Cortez.

Bianca’s other foot is in restaurant industry, where she honed her skills at the beloved restaurants Oleana, al di lá and Prune.

MARK USEWICZ

Mark’s culinary education began at La Varenne Ecole de Cuisine in Paris. He followed culinary school with a stage at the renowned Michelin three-starred Restaurant Lucas Carton, where he had the extraordinary privilege to train under world class Chef Alain Senderens, one of the founding fathers of Nouvelle Cuisine.

Mark spent 10 years cooking in Boston, starting out at Casablanca, then helmed by James Beard award-winning chef Ana Sortun. When he took the reins of his own kitchen at The Independent, Mat Schafer of the Boston Herald called him a “rising star.” Mark left Massachusetts for New York, landing in Brooklyn, where he was the Executive Chef at the historic Montauk Club and Palo Santo Comedor y Bar de Vino in Park Slope.
